Faculty Advisor Spotlight on Maya Jimenez – Kingsborough Community College, SUNY (NY)

A newbie to Pearson’s Faculty Advisor program, Maya Jimenez joins the team as the first Faculty Advisor for MyArtsLab.  An assistant professor in Art History at Kingsborough Community College, CUNY, Jimenez was drawn to the Faculty Advisor program because of the opportunity it affords her to learn from the “veteran” FA’s.  She’s also looking forward to sharing her own MyArtsLab experiences with her peers.

Jimenez requires MyArtsLab in her course and uses it just like a textbook is used in a traditional course.  “I integrate it into every aspect of my course,” says Jimenez with students using MyArtsLab to take quizzes, watch videos, access and print out flashcards, take advantage of a variety of writing resources.

With the technology entering into every aspect of her course, student reaction was a primary concern for Jimenez, but to her surprise, her students really enjoy using MyArtsLab.
“It might be a generational trademark, but students caught on to the technology very quickly. Every time I would introduce an additional feature of MyArtsLab in class, my students would immediately become more active and enthusiastic learners. Since MyArtsLab offers a variety of resources, including diagrams, videos, flashcards, e-books, etc., I think students are energized by these various learning tools.”

Being so new to the program, Jimenez doesn’t yet have an advice to impart upon her fellow Faculty Advisors, but she definitely appreciates the wisdom being shared by her colleagues here on the blog.

Welcome, Maya! Congratulations on being the first FA for MyArtsLab. :) I'm thinking that your art class referenced here might be art history? I would be interested to know more about the tools involved in the art lab. What types of printable flashcards, diagrams, and videos are available for you? I don't actually teach art--just curious! In Spanish we have phenomenal flashcards...soon I think students may be able to print them! Good luck to you!
