Faculty Advisor Spotlight on Dr. Maureen Loiacano, Montgomery College (TX)

Be honest and transparent about whatever information you share with your peers on how you run your own program, advises Maureen Loiacano, Chair of Mathematics and Education at Montgomery College. Loiacano follows her own advice as a Faculty Advisor which helps her share with and learn from her colleagues.

Being a Faculty Advisor for Loiacano includes fielding calls for more information on her course redesign program that sometimes even leads to campus visits. Loiacano uses MyMathLab at both the developmental and collegiate level of mathematics. “We could not offer what we do without MyMathLab,” says Loiacano who incorporates MyMathLab in both traditional classes and online classes.

Most surprising for Loiacano since first using MyMathLab years ago is the student demand for the product. “Our students want MyMathLab” because they like the feedback they can receive from the product. MyMathLab allows students to, “take charge of their learning,” and see their progress through the homework they complete within MyMathLab.

“We are always learning and trying to make our students [more] successful,” says Loiacano and the results are pretty easy to see at even the most basic level. Enrollments increased and the size of the math department grew so much that the department had to split into separate branches for college-level math and developmental math.
