Speaking About Course Redesign Online Event Draws a Big Crowd

Almost 300 registrants joined in a day-long webinar devoted to course redesign. Each of the seven, 60-minute sessions averaged 100 faculty participants and covered popular topics in redesign ranging from getting started, to overcoming common obstacles, to tracking student data.

Speakers were from Psychology, Biology, Spanish, and Mathematics, and attendees branched out to hear speakers outside of their own disciplines – a first for this Webex series. We also saw an increase in attendees outside of the English and Math disciplines – two disciplines that have historically been most closely-associated with active course redesign. A large collection of faculty from Psychology, Sociology, and World Languages also participated.

A special thanks to our Faculty Advisors who shared their own course redesign stories with attendees:
·    Lori Van Wallendael, University of North Carolina, Charlotte (Psychology)
·    Craig Lending, The College at Brockport, State University of New York (Biology)
·    Kristy Britt, University of South Alabama (Spanish)
·    Teresa Overton, Northern Virginia Community College (Mathematics)
·    Kathy Almy, Rock Valley College (Mathematics)
·    Phoebe Rouse, Louisiana State University (Mathematics)

Attendees were able to share feedback and ask questions throughout the day. Here are a few of the comments we received:

Thank you! That was quite helpful.
Composition Professor, State Fair Community College

I’ve used Mastering for two years and students…often comment that they’re glad they had the resource!”
Microbiology Professors and Faculty Advisor, Shoreline Community College

Good data and showing the valve of giving students feedback…”
Math and Physics Professor, Owens Community College
