MyFoundationsLab is Ready to Help Nontraditional Students Succeed

The Obama Administration has tasked higher education with both producing an additional 5 million community college degree- or certificate-bearing graduates by 2020. To attain this goal, some institutions are reaching beyond graduating high school seniors to nontraditional students such as working adults, GED students, and English-language learners who are seeking career retraining, additional job skills, or a degree for the first time.

Pearson is at the forefront of addressing this need with a new product: MyFoundationsLab. MyFoundationsLab has content covering developmental reading, writing and math as well as basic study skills, but is designed for students outside the traditional math and English department curriculum. The product starts with a series of diagnostic exams (Path Builders) which create a personalized Learning Path for each student. From there, each student works through a series of pre-created and pre-assigned activities designed to improve their reading, writing, math or study skills. The focus of MyFoundationsLab is progress and understanding, not a particular grade. Although MyFoundationsLab is a unique product, much of the interface does look familiar and we are using some proven functionality from MyMathLab to help students succeed.

Why are we telling you this? There are probably programs within your school (college readiness, GED prep, community outreach) where MyFoundationsLab would be perfect—and those programs are often desperately seeking a solution to their needs. So, you can tell them about MyFoundationsLab, tell your rep to contact one of your colleagues, or take a look at MyFoundationsLab yourself and determine where you see it fitting at your institution. (Your existing MyMathLab username and password should work for MyFoundationsLab.)

  1. I'm really impressed with Myfoundationslab. We plan to use it for a summer bridge program with incoming freshman who are just shy of being college level in math. I like that it has everything ready to go: videos, pretest, posttest. It's tailored to each student's needs. But where I think it has even greater potential is with GED programs. It has english and reading incorporated in the program along with study skills. Very rich program that's well designed and versatile.

I have been encouraging my admin to pilot it with our summer bridge program. This year we'll try the MyReadinessTest and hopefully will have data to support our request. I am so pleased with the support provided even just in the customized study plans!
